NRI students outperform Indians in CBSE

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 10 students in Gulf countries have recorded a whopping 96.68 pass percentage this year, about 12 per cent more than what their counterparts have achieved in India.

The CBSE announced the class 10 examination results on Tuesday with an overall pass percentage of 84.44 per cent.

This year, a total of 9,787 candidates from 91 schools appeared for the examination from Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, of which 9,462 qualified.

While 93.78 per cent students passed last year, according to the CBSE, this year 2.9 percent more students have passed the examination.

"We are happy that Gulf students are doing very well. Students of these countries have been facing tough competition from students of some other boards and certainly doing better year after year. This year nearly 3 percent more students qualified their examinations," CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly said.

"Though the class 12 results were a little less than last year, better results in class 10 will bring much hope and cheer to the region and their parents," Ganguly said.

As usual Girls in the Gulf have outperformed boys. While 98.08 percent girls have passed this year, 95.3 per cent boys have achieved success. In 2006, 94.34 per cent girls had tasted success as against 93.21 per cent boys.

"This year a total of 659 candidates from Gulf region have scored more than 90 per cent of which 415 are girls and 244 are boys. Last year the number was 510 including 335 girls," Ganguly added.

In the year 2007, a total of 705,857 candidates had appeared for the class 10-board examination both in India and aboard - an 8.93 per cent increase in number of candidates over the last year.
